I finally feel ready to talk about this, as it is actually getting serious now. Some might roll their eyes at the build-up to this, but in my mind, it's a huge step in our lives and it required tons of prayer, research, and good old fashioned thinking.
We are house shopping.
It began when we received our lease renewal notice from our management company and, due to regular inflation, the rent cost had gone up. It got me thinking that it might be pretty darn comparable to a small mortgage payment. After doing some research about the size of home we'd be looking at, the typical cost of that size house, and the current mortgage rates, it turned out that I was right. I did a little more searching on homes in the area, saw a few that I was interested in, and put an informative email out to a realtor. To make a long story short, within one week, we had spoken with the realtor, gotten some more information on houses in the area, met with the realtor, and gotten pre-approved for a home loan.
After going through the initial housing report of 54 homes that the realtor sent us, we have narrowed it down to a mere ten homes that we are interested in viewing. We are meeting with the realtor tomorrow (Friday - it doesn't quite feel like tomorrow as I'm writing this at 12:30am on Thursday) to view six of those homes.
While this is definitely exciting, I'm feeling more overwhelmed and nervous than anything else. It's a HUGE purchase. I'm trying to keep everything in perspective right now, but it's hard not to feel scared pantsless. This isn't like finding an apartment, where if you decide you hate it after a few months, you can leave and find another place. This is a home we plan to spend a minimum of five years living in. That's why I need to keep myself from feeling rushed into buying a home. Just because we only have a list of 10 houses, doesn't mean we HAVE to buy one of them. If we need to wait until the perfect house for us comes on the market, so be it. But at the same time, it would be utterly amazing and wonderful if we fell in love with a home on Friday.
It's mind boggling to think that in just two weeks, this has gone from simple curiosity about mortgage payments to actually looking for a house. I'm so overwhelmed at times, I feel like crying, but I really do believe that it's in our best interest. The boys need a backyard where they don't have to worry about someone not picking up after their dog (which happens way too often around our complex). We're slowly growing out of our apartment. Over the past month, I'd been wondering why it was getting increasingly difficult to keep the place clean. The space just isn't working as well as it used to. Nathan is bigger and they are both more active. It's funny to say that we're growing out of a place when there as just as many of us as there was when we moved in, but it's the only way to describe it.
Well, that's it. The big decision. Maybe it doesn't seem so big to everyone else, but it's a little frightening for me and I had to weigh things carefully before I felt comfortable talking about it. Change is scary, I suppose. I'm sure I'll have lots to share after our house hunt on Friday. For now, I need to go to bed and rest. I am scheduled for an 8 hour shift tomorrow, which will be exhausting, but strangely enough, I'm more concerned about the kids. I drop them off at the babysitter's around noon, John will pick them up after he gets off work, and then I won't get home until after they are in bed. I'm going to miss them tomorrow. I just hope Nathan doesn't get too mad at me.
