After a long, exhausting weekend and Monday, Tuesday was supposed to be spent here at home. I was going to spend the day catching up on cleaning and just trying to relieve a little stress. It did not work out that way at all.
First thing in the morning, I needed to check our bank account online. I tried to log in, but it wouldn't let me. So I had to call customer service to figure out why and ended up spending 10 minutes on the phone with a representative. She finally gave up and transferred me to tech support. I spent another 5-10 minutes on the phone with them. They finally worked it out and I was able to log on. As I was doing what I needed to get done, I hear this HUGE crash and Nathan starts screaming. I run out of the office to find him trapped underneath his high chair, which he had pulled onto himself. I'm assuming he was using it to cruise (as he does most things) and just pulled a little too hard.
It took about 10 minutes to calm him down with a good nursing, then I took a look at his head. The bruise was unbelievable. I actually got out my tape measure! It was nearly 5 inches long, raised about a half an inch off of his head, with 2-3 large bumps along the length, and very dark purple. The bar in the back of the high chair had smashed into the left side of his head.
Now I know what to watch for when a head bump happens, but I've NEVER seen a bruise like that before, so I called the advice nurse. Because of the severity of the bruise, and due to Nathan's age (he can't tell me if his head hurts or he feels dizzy), she wanted him to be seen. As I get off the phone with her, Aiden slips on some books he left in the floor and bonks his head on the bookshelf! He was completely fine, but it was one of those moments where I just looked upwards and said, "REALLY???".
I had to call John at work to tell him, he came home, I drove him back to work, and then took Nathan to the doctor. It was later in the afternoon, so they were running a little behind and as I was trying to get checked in, their computer decided that our insurance was invalid (we were just there the day before for a flu shot!). We finally got checked in, but because of all that, we were checked in 10 minutes AFTER our appointment time. Aiden decided it was a good time to run wild in the waiting room (he seemed to give a big "so what?" to the fact that they had Finding Nemo on) and as I'm trying to keep him from just standing at the drinking fountain pushing the button, he starts yelling, "NO MOMMY!!! STOP KICKING ME!!". Awesome. Please son, make it sound like I'm beating you in front of a waiting room full of people.
After a few minutes, another mom comes over and starts to play with Aiden. She says to me, "I remember how it was trying to control a toddler with a baby on your hip!". I appreciated that she didn't assume that I was a terrible parent, but at the same time, I felt like bursting into tears and yelling, "I really am a capable parent most of the time!!!".
We finally get back into the exam room (25 minutes after our appointment time), and Nathan gets weighed. He had gained a full pound since his checkup a month prior (upping him to the 21st perc. instead of the 18th). I had thought he'd gained two pounds, but I guess I was a little stressed and couldn't remember exactly what he weighed last time.
The doctor checks him out and said that he looked fine, but it was possible for vomiting due to a head trauma to still happen, so we needed to keep a good eye on him until it had been 12 hours since the accident (midnight). The good thing about having a pediatrician who has raised a boy himself (maybe two, I don't remember....Hannah might know!), is that he knows head bonks just come with the territory. He told me not to stress about it too much, as this will certainly not be the last big bad bump on the head that either boys get.
The thing about these "emergency" visits is that I always wonder if I'm just wasting their time. I know it was the nurse who said he needed to be seen, but I pretty much figured he was fine and still felt a little silly going in. But our awesome pediatrician reminded me that it's regular practice to see a patient under 12 months who had had a head injury, even if they seem normal and to remember that with head injuries, it's so much better to check it out and make sure everything is fine than to not and end up with a scull fracture.
There was a lot of stress involved with our Tuesday, and it didn't end with the doctor visit, but I don't really feel like going into the rest of it now and John would probably feel like it was too personal to write about here. I'll just say that there's a lot of personal stress to deal with right now from decisions that need to be made to trying to not let other people's actions affect me too much. Things just never seem to end sometimes, but I'm trying to keep a positive attitude and believe that I'll come out of this a stronger person.
And because I want to end on a positive note, I want to say how absolutely beautiful this fall has been here in the Northwest. Even though the trees have lost most of their leaves by now, I'm still enjoying sitting here at my computer by the window, looking at the leaves that scatter the grassy area outside our apartment, and watching the rain fall. I love this time of year!
