Oh, Cats

Our cat Jack is a bit of a hunter, but he is an indoor cat so he doesn't get too much true hunting time in (unless you count hunting his brother a few times a day). His hunting instinct kicked in earlier yesterday and we had a small scare.

There is a birds nest in the gutter right above our bedroom window and the eggs recently hatched. So there was much baby bird squawking going on yesterday morning and Jack had parked himself right below our window for a few hours. We were all out in the living room when suddenly we hear a bit of a bang come from the bedroom. Now, the cats cause quite a bit of crashing and normally I don't drop everything to check on it, but I felt the need to do so this time. I walk into our room and see that our other cat, Poe, is peering out of the window and the screen is slightly mangled. I began calling for Jack, but there was no response and I looked out of the window, but I couldn't see anything. We are on the 2nd floor and there is a tree right outside of our window, which does block the view to the ground a bit. I called for John and he went outside around to the tree area to see if he could find Jack while I continued to search inside.

After a few minutes of no luck, I saw John walking back and forth around the tree so I thought that he might have found Jack but was having trouble coercing him out. I grabbed the cat food and ran outside, but by the time I got down the stairs, John had been able to grab Jack and was bringing him in. Poor Jack was meowing so loud and was visibly distraught. Apparently, when John went out there, Jack wasn't moving or meowing, so he was a little concerned but once Jack saw John, he began to attempt to climb up the tree towards our bedroom window.

We got him inside and let him sort himself out before checking him for injuries, but he was just a little shaken. We fixed the screen as best as we could and shut the window. We keep all of the windows that are in reach of the kids just open slightly and locked, but if the window is in an area where the kids can't get to, we've been keeping them fully open for the air flow. But I guess since we have an adventurous cat, we shouldn't do that any more!
